Kurtland Ma, rest in peace, was mutilated and murdered in 2014 in a horrifically violent episode by his then boyfriend Andre Davids. Davids was convicted in Dec. 2015 of manslaughter following a two day deliberation in which he was acquitted of the second degree murder charge.
I’m covering the news here as I believe there should be more awareness of men with Asian heritage as targets, victims of violence.
The details the news broadcast chose to omit were indeed disturbing. Among the fatal injuries inflicted by knife were dozens of stab wounds, disembowelment and evisceration, organ removal, and penis severing. Some organs, including Ma’s penis, were put into Ma’s mouth.
“But the bombshell came when it was disclosed that he had mutilated his ex. Mr. Davids confessed to the killing, admitting to investigators that he also mutilated Dr. Ma by removing his genitalia and inserting them into his mouth.
Sheriff Homicide detective Lt. John Corina acknowledged that “He did remove some organs and stabbed him quite a few times.” While local deputies would not confirm for WeHo News the rumors of mutilation at the time, the deputies that responded to the call did indicate the manner of Mr. Ma ‘s mutilation, though, after Lt. Coleman’s report was issued and Lt. Corona spoke to the press.” WeHo news.
By all accounts, Dr. Ma was a good man.
“Ma’s death certainly has stunned his wide circle friends, who describe him as always happy. “I asked him why he always smiled,” said Christian Sipaco, a nurse in New York City who knew Ma when he was in medical school. “He described it as his ‘perma-grin.’ He said ‘I can’t take it off’.”
“He was so smart,” said Chung, an emergency room doctor in Boston who also noted Ma’s infectious smile. And it seemed to come to him easily—“it seemed like he never had to study.”” WeHo news
As a Yale Med. School graduate, he really could have had his pick of specialties, but Dr. Ma chose the emergency care, an area that ranks near the bottom in the stress-to-pay ratio.
Davids has not yet been sentenced but faces potentially twelve years in prison for the crime.
