“A week ago Hong Kong went into a bit of a frenzy over a video titled “Guy steals girl from Chinese guy”. Posted May 9, it has received 1.28 million hits, done a few rounds in the tabloids, and prompted a stream of reactions on several online forums.
In the clip, an Asian girl is seen talking initially to an Asian man in a bar while two white guys, friends of the man recording the video, stand by. One white guy starts trying to get the girl’s attention, apparently to see if she would leave the Asian guy. Fast forward to later in the night, and she’s locked in an embrace with the white dude while the Asian guy stands looking helpless, still holding her hand. And there you have it, the title of this Oscar-winning movie: Guy steals girl from Chinese guy.
The hoo-ha, I gather from what I’ve read, is over the suggestion that the Hong Kong Chinese guy (that is their assumption; not mine) — and by extension all Hong Kong Chinese guys — can’t get the girl because of she prefers the white guy…”
