I spent hours as a kid watching VHS cassettes of stuff my parents recorded off of cable. They were pennywise parents, signing up for a month of free cable at the beginning of our summer break from school, recording every freaking program that looked remotely interesting, adding that to the movie collection, and then canceling the cable account before getting charged.
Some stories really capture a kid’s imagination. You know what I mean… you can tell when someone has spent a lot of “mind time” in a certain space. One of my all time favorites is Jim Henson’s, “The Dark Crystal. This is the original trailer (1982):
It’s a story about the birth and death of duality in a world that was plundered by “essence”-hungry twisted creatures – Skesis. There’s an innocent “gelfling” species; they have no clue that the Skesis kill, enslave, and harvest this kind of life energy called “essence” from them. Eventually the Skesis execute a genocidal plan against all gelfling. As this world lay on the edge of ruin and permanent dark despair under Skesis control, the “mystics” a group of benevolent chanting beings make their way back to assist. I’m getting carried away describing it.
There is a scene in The Dark Crystal where the protagonist gelfling is selecting a crystal shard, looking for something that was once part of a larger powerful crystal. He uses his flute to play a tune and one resonates. He selects it. It selects him.
My nephew came over to my house, went over to my mineral collection, and was very fond of a few specimens, three of them. The prophecy! Haha. He got all three though. I don’t know of he has a pan-flute thingy, so Big Uncle helped him out.
He really like the Lapis Lazuli pyramid below. The two others are from my standing collection.
